Mr. William L. Barksdale

Mr. William L. Barksdale, 80, of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, was born on January 7, 1937, in Halifax, Virginia. He was born to the late Linwood and Essie Mae Barksdale. He answered God’s summon to eternal rest and peace on Friday, April 14, 2017, at home, after a short illness.

William’s formal education was obtained in Halifax, Virginia Public Schools.

William then enlisted in the United States Army and the United States National Guard. William accomplished a great many things during his military career: The Army Achievement Medal, The Army Commendation Medal, United States Army Safety Award, Military Commendation Medal Award, Certificate of Appreciation Division of Military and Naval Affairs - State of New York, and Certificate of Appreciation - The American Legion Post 425, Littleton, North Carolina

William met and married Doris Crowder. Out of this union was two children, Darlene Barksdale and Antonio Barksdale.

William later moved to the Bronx, New York and began working at Federal Reserve Bank in Manhattan, New York. He then went on to work for New York Transit Authority until his retirement in 1996. He received many awards for safe driving during his 20 years of service.

Bill, as he was affectionately called, was a very loving person. He always had a big smile and a gentle heart. He was a family man and loved and cared for his family very much. Bill had high regards for his children, grandchildren, sisters, and brothers. He loved his family. He had a special relationship with each and every one of them. God sometimes places someone in your path who you can always depend on. For him, it was his brother, Lenwood. They had a bond that will never be broken and he will forever miss him. He was his caregiver, brother, and friend.

Bill was a man who loved the Lord. He attended Roanoke Salem Missionary Baptist Church as often as he could.

There are some things which God allows us to carry into the next world and these things are the equivalent in life of the opportunities that God gives us. So, William carries with him, faith in God, a warm and loving heart, his high esteem and love of us… his family who cherishes his memory and mourns their loss.

William was preceded in death by two sisters: Wilsey and Catherine Barksdale. William leaves to cherish his memories, two daughters: Darlene Barksdale and Tyonia Carrington; one son: Antonio Barksdale; two sisters: Zenobia Foster of Pittsburgh, PA and Emma Young of Baltimore, MD; three brothers: Samuel Canada of New York, Lenwood Barksdale of Virginia, and George Barksdale of Virginia; sister-in-law: Dorothy Barksdale; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, great-nieces, nephews, great-nephews, other relatives and friends.

A Visitation for Mr. Barksdale will be held from 11:00 am to 12:00 Noon, with the Funeral Service following the Visitation, beginning at 12:00 Noon on Friday, April 21, 2017, in the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home. The Interment will take place immediately after the Service in Crestview Memorial Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC.
