Obituary

Rocky Mount, NC

Marie M. Patrick, was born on November 27, 1930 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina to the late Charles Whitehead and Rosa Lee McNeal Whitehead. She passed away on April 13, 2017 at the Rocky Mount Rehab Center after a lengthy illness.

She was educated in the Edgecombe County Public Schools. She accepted Christ at an early age as her personal savior worshipping at the Pittman Grove Baptist Church.

Marie moved to New York City in 1947, where she attended a Nursing School Program and earned a diploma as a Certified Nursing Assistant. She later found employment at a Secaucus, New Jersey Clothing Company in the Shipping and Receiving Department where she stayed over twenty years. She also worked in a Toy and Novelty Company, also in the Shipping and Receiving Department.

After retiring, she moved to Parana City, Florida to help care for her grandchildren. In 1992, Marie returned to Rocky Mount, North Carolina where she spent her remaining years.

She was married to George R. Nickens, Sr. on June 30, 1956, which later ended in divorce. She later married Leo Patrick, which lasted until his death.

Marie was known for her kindness and generosity to others, even strangers.

She always tried to instill in her children, grandchildren, assorted nieces and nephews to aim high and always try to do the right thing.

She was preceded in by her mother, Rosa Lee; father, Charles Whiehead and sister, Ella Middleton.

Marie leaves behind two sons, Calvin B. McNeal and George R. Nickens, Jr.; two grandchildren, Christopher R. Nickens and Jessica R. Nickens; one great grandson Isaiah G. Nickens; two sisters, Essie R. Brown and Cora L. Campbell along with a host of nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews.

A Visitation for Mrs. Patrick will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., with the Funeral Service following the Visitation, beginning at 1:00 p.m., on Thursday, April 20, 2017 at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church; 702 W. Raleigh Blvd., in Rocky Mount, N.C. The interment will take place immediately after the service in Gardens of Gethsemane in Rocky Mount, N.C.
