Mrs. Evelyn Whitaker Coats, 68, of Enfield, North Carolina, died on Saturday, August 5, 2017, due to complications from cancer.

Ms. Evelyn was born on February 13, 1949 in Enfield, North Carolina to the late James and Ethel Whitaker.

She attended Halifax County Schools. At a very young age, she joined New Bethel Baptist Church. Later, she married James H. Taylor and they had three sons; she later adopted Marcell.

Ms. Evelyn was employed as an industry worker. After several years in North Carolina, she relocated to Richmond, Virginia, where she fellowshipped with Victory Life Fellowship Church. In 2005, she married Avery H. Coats and they relocated to Martinsburg, West Virginia where she was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church for many years. She returned back home to North Carolina and became a member of Real Truth Ministry. Ms. Evelyn and Avery then adopted five sons. Ms. Evelyn was an avid gardener until she became ill. She loved helping the community and people less fortunate than herself.

Ms. Evelyn is survived by her husband, Avery; her daughter: Sandra Shearin (Jasper) of Richmond, VA; her sons: James Curtis Taylor (Twanda) and Sammy Tyrell Taylor (Darla), both of Martinsburg, WV, Marcell Starkes of Oxon Hill, MD, Rameel, Shamar, Zephaniah, Ted and Dontavious Coats; her grandchildren: Natasha, Ernest, Lakesha, Brittany, Anthony, Steven, Diana, Jasmine, ShanQuetta, Evelyn, Teanna, Tre’Sean, Jalyn, Amina, Ashley, and Drucilla; ten great-grandchildren; five brothers: Ernest (Sally), Rev. James (Rev. Betty), Tony (Dorathea), Michael, and Calvin (Tonia); four sisters: Pastor Rosa Lyons (Milton), Carolyn (Tony), Ethel and Loraine; one aunt: Bertha Cooper; and a host of nieces and nephews, as well as, a devoted friend of over 40 years: Jenny Turner.

She was preceded in death by her son, Gregory Leon Taylor.

A Visitation for Mrs. Coats will be held from 12:00 Noon to 1:00 pm, with the Funeral Service following the Visitation, beginning at 1:00 pm, on Saturday, August 12, 2017, in the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home. The Interment will take place immediately after the Service in Crestview Memorial Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC.
