Mr. Roland T. "R.T." Smith

Roland Thomas Smith “R.T.”, “Tall Pine”, son of the late Willie Amos Smith and Ida Marie Butler Smith was born on December 3,1946 in Wilson County, North Carolina. He departed this life to his heavenly home on February 24, 2018 at Wilson Medical Center.

He attended and graduated in 1965 from Frederick Douglas High School.

Thomas joined the Church of Lord Jesus Christ of Apostolic Faith, 513 East Walnut Street, Wilson, North Carolina in 1959 and continued his membership until his death.

He was a successful carpenter and builder employed at Swift and Company for ten years. He was also the Vice President of The Golden Knights Motorcycle Club.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter,Valerie Smith; brothers, Thurman Smith, Richard Smith and Willie Smith; sister, Debra Ann Hobgood; sisters-in-law, Hellen Smith and Nellie Joyner.

He leaves to cherish special memories his loving and devoted wife of fifty years, Elizabeth Pope Smith of the home; one brother, Kenneth Joyner “Pete” of Wilson, NC; two sisters, Hattie Wilson “Virginia” of Wilson, NC and Elsie Smith of New York, NY; four sons he
reared, Eric Haley of Wilson, NC, Derrico Haley of Maryland, John Pender and Corlis Pender of Wilson, NC; four aunts, Besie Howard, Irella Massey, Edna Gray Williams and Eldress Mary Simon (Woodrow) all of Wilson, NC; four sisters-in-law, Paulette Williams,
Mavis Smith, Debra Pender all of Wilson, NC and Cynthia Horne (Thomas) of Elm City, NC; seven brothers-in-law, Eric Pender of Fayetteville, NC, Doug Barnes (Belinda) of Raleigh NC, Carl Pope, Thomas Pope, Niagua Falls, Earl Pope and George Pope all of Wilson, NC; special friend, Sherman Brown of Elm City, NC and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A Visitation for Mr. Smith will be held from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, with the Funeral Service following the Visitation, beginning at 12:00 pm, on Saturday, March 3, 2018, at Johnson Chapel Baptist Church, 317 Beauvue Rd, Elm City, North Carolina. The interment will take place immediately after the service at Rest Haven Cemetery in Wilson, North Carolina.
