Obituary

Rocky Mount, NC

Wilma Devonya Barnes Chavirs, affectionately known as Von, was born on October 5, 1963 in Nash County, to the late William and Geraldine Lewis Barnes. On October 5, 2017 the Heavens opened at Duke Hospital as we celebrated her 54th birthday. After the celebration, Von went with the hosts of Heaven and entered into eternal rest.

Von was born into the Red Budd Holy Church family, and remained an active member of the church until her health failed. She was not an active member of the choir, but she would always send text messages during Church service, making song requests. Von graduated from Northern Nash Senior High School in 1981, where she proudly sang in the high school choir, under the leadership of her cousin, Pastor Luther Barnes. She proudly served her country in the US Marine Corps from 1982-1986, from which she received an honorable discharge, reaching the rank of Lance Corporal. In 2010,she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from NC Wesleyan College. She was a few courses shy of completing her Master’s degree in Criminal Justice from Strayer University. She was employed over the years at ILCO Unican, Consolidated Diesel Corporation (now Rocky
Mount Engine Plant),and finally at Pfizer Pharmaceuticals at the time of her death. Von loved God,her Church, her husband, her children, her grandchildren, her family, and her friends. She was totallydevoted to them all.
