Shirley Mae Thorne Battle, first born daughter of the late Louise Thorne Sumler and the late Calvin Jones. Sr. entered this world on April 28, 1934 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
“...A Time To Die.”
On Wednesday, March 7, 2018, Shirley Battle completed her journey on earth in the flesh. She has gone from labor to reward with the almighty Father in Heaven. She is resting in the arms of our Lord and Savior.
“A Time To Plant.”
Shirley was the awesome wife of Huras James Battle, whom she married on December 13, 1952, which was a total of 65 years and three months. Through their union eight children were born. Dwight Lamont (preceded in death), Huras James Jr. (preceded in
death), Marion Taylor, Paula Denise, Tyree Shirette, Dwayne, Angela Darlene, and Wrenaldo Keith. She was a gratified grandmother of twenty-three grandchildren and twenty
She attended the Rocky Mount City Schoolsand became a member of Mt. Zion First Baptist Church where she surrendered her life to God.
Shirley the matriarch of the Thorne and Battle family was truly a blessing while she served so many people. She exemplified the love of God for all to see as she traveled her time on earth. She had a giving and caring spirit. She accomplished the goal and desire of building a foundation for her children teaching them to put God first. She strongly believed in keeping the family together.
She was employed by Pillowtex and Summergrade Industry for twenty years. As a servant of God, she was gifted with using her hands to make delicious gourmet dishes. She was known for her strawberry shortcake, banana pudding and fruit pizzas. The most
important, she loved to cook and serve her family and friends.
Shirley joined the ladies of the Les Gemmes Incorporated which provides support throughout community. She was recognized by the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority as a Pearl of the Community in 1984. Her Heart...Mount Zion First Baptist Church where she served in
the following ministries: The Deaconess Board (Deaconess); The Altar Courtesy Guild (decorates the Altar); The Women’s Day Leadership; The Camaraderie Club; The Hospitality Committee (hostess for church repasts /preparing and serving food for church
functions and to members sick or shut-in and bereaved families);and the Frank Bryant Usher Board (Emeritus member); Pastor Kelvin G. Thurman presented her the Faithful Service Award in May 2015 (a plaque);
Her Beloved Sisterhood...
The Rocky Mount Chapter of Les Gemmes, Inc. This is a Service Sorority that meets the needs of the community. In this capacity she selected and purchased useful gifts for area
nursing home residents during the monthly Rest Home Cheer.
She was a three time Recipient of the Precious Jewel Award (the President’s Choice Award for Faithful and Dedicated Service presented by the late Shirley Macklin Felton).

dissolved, we have a building of God and a house not made with
hands, eternal in the heaven.” 2 Corinthians 5:4

“Weeping may endure for a night but joy cometh in the morning.”
“...A Time To Mourn And A Time To Dance.”
She leaves to cherish her memory her husband: Huras Battle (Sonny Boy); children, Marion Taylor, Paula Young (Robert), Tyree, Dwayne (Audrey), Angela, and Wrenaldo; siblings, Peggy Jordan (Jarvis), Linda Barbour (Bennie), Jacqueline Sloan (Bernard), Willie Thorne (Nancy), Thelma Hart, Calvin Jones Jr., Linda Jones, and Debra Jones; her twenty-three grandchildren,twenty-nine great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews,
grandchildren, great-grandchildren, uncles, aunts, cousins and many friends.
A Viewing for Mrs. Battle will be held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Sunday, March 11, 2018, in the Rocky Mount Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home. A Celebration of Her Life will be held at 12:00 Noon, on Monday, March 12, 2018, at Mt. Zion First Baptist Church, 320 W. Thomas Street, in Rocky Mount, NC. The interment will take place immediately after the Service in Gardens of Gethsemane in Rocky Mount, NC.
