Obituary

Roanoke Rapids

Mrs. Ernestine Jeanette Barnes, 83, of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.

We give thanks to God for the life of Ernestine Jeanette Toney Barnes, born April 15, 1935 to the late Paul J. Toney and Susie A. Toney in Halifax County, North Carolina.

She received her formal education through Halifax County Public Schools and graduated from John Armstrong Chaloner High School in May of 1954.

In her early years, she accepted Christ as Lord and Savior and joined Quankey Missionary Baptist Church where she served faithfully.

Ernestine was united in Holy Matrimony to William Howard Barnes on April 6, 1957. To this union, two beautiful daughters were born, Sylvia Delano Barnes and Loretta Barnes.

Ernestine relocated to Long Island, New York and became a member of Union Baptist Church in Hempstead, New York and served in the choir. Upon returning to Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, Ernestine reunited with First Baptist Church of Weldon, North Carolina. She later moved her membership to Quankey Missionary Baptist Church and served in the church choir and Missionary Ministry.

In addition to her parents, Ernestine was preceded in death by her husband: William Howard Barnes and her daughter: Sylvia; and sister: Vernice Toney Martin.

Ernestine peacefully transitioned into eternal rest at her home on May 12, 2018 in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.

Precious memories will be treasured by her daughter: Loretta Barnes of the home; three granddaughters: Cristina Nicole Williams and Jessica Marie Williams of Long Island, NY, and Kiara Jamela Sease of Florida; sister: Mattie Bradley (Bennie) of Maplewood, NJ; niece: Oriana Toney; four nephews: Kern Martin, Robert Toney, Al Bradley, and Ronald Bradley; and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends.

A Visitation for Mrs. Barnes will be held from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, with the Funeral Service following the Visitation, beginning at 11:00 am, on Friday, May 18, 2018, at Quankey Baptist Church, 3625 NC Hwy 48, in Roanoke Rapids, NC. The Interment will take place immediately after the Service in Crestview Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC.
