Mr. Joseph "Bone" Battle, Sr.

Rocky Mount, NC

Joseph Battle, Sr. was born on November 1, 1928 into a family of eight children to the late Lizzie Dozier. Late Wednesday afternoon, March 7, 2018, Mr. Battle was called Home while in care at Nash General Hospital.

Joseph attended school in Edgecombe County. He was employed at Edgecombe Meat Company for five years and other companies to provide for his family. Joe was later employed by Wooten’s Marine, Inc. in Rocky Mount where he was affectionately called “Bone.” Bone loved his job and looked forward to going to work and worked for more than 30 years before retiring from Wooten’s Marine.

Joseph accepted Christ at First Baptist Church in Battleboro, NC at an early age. He enjoyed serving as the musician for his home church, Pittman Grove Baptist, Little Zion Baptist, First Calvary Missionary Baptist, and other churches. A few of Joe’s favorites songs to sing were “There’s a Bright Side Somewhere”, “Somewhere Around God’s Throne”, “He Touched Me” and “Peace in the Valley.”

Joseph married the love of his life Minda Fobbs on November 17, 1951 in Nashville, NC. To this union three children were born, Joseph, Jr., Michael, and Linda (aka Lynn). Joe loved spending time with his family and joking around to make them laugh. His favorite sport was fishing. He found it to be very relaxing and competitive. Joseph made the newspaper once for having the largest and heaviest catch of the day!
