Precious in the eyesight of the Lord is the death of His Saints. Psalms 115:16

Mother Ethel Mae McKnight (ninety-three years of age; fondly known as: Mama Dear, Baby, & Punky), took the wings of the morning to meet her Lord & Savior on March 24,
2018. Mrs. Ethel Mae McKnight was born on August 1, 1924 to the late Ben Warren and Armissie Payton.

She was educated in Pitt County Public Schools in Greenville, NC. The family later moved to Rocky Mount where she resided until death.

Mother Ethel Mae McKnight was married to the late Ben McKnight, Sr. who preceded her in death. To this union six children were born.

She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and joined Faith Tabernacle Holy Church. She will be forever remembered for her beautiful hats and warm smile as she served faithfully in the choir and on the Mother’s Board until her health failed. Mother McKnight loved to sing and one of her greatest joys were serving and singing in the choir.

Even during her weakest days, we would find her singing songs of encouragement such as: Pass Me Not, Reach Out and Touch, There’s a Bright Side Somewhere, Just Keep on
Praying. Singing was her way of staying encouraged as she looked unto Jesus, the author and finisher of her faith.

She was employed at Nash General Hospital until retirement in 1988.

Mrs. McKnight was a mother extraordinaire, and often remarked that her greatest joy was her children. She leaves to continue her legacy of love six children: Ben McKnight, Jr (Pat); Ethel McKinney (Joe); Sam McKnight (Shirley); Ernestine Knight (William); Tamey Knight
(Alphonso) all of Rocky Mount, NC; Betty Umstead (McKinley) of Knightdale, NC. She has ten beautiful grandchildren: Denise McKnight, Kimberly McKnight, Brian McKnight, Jason McKnight, Debra Ann McKnight, Breanna Knight all of Rocky Mount, NC; Bobby Barnes, Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; NaTasha Dancy, Charlotte, NC; Bettina Umstead, Durham, NC and Dr. MaKendra Umstead of Boston, Mass.; and eleven great- grandchildren; one brother,
Jesse Payton (Virgie) of Hillside, New Jersey, (4 siblings preceded her in death: Ben Payton, Jr, Joe Payton, Alice Hayes, and Helen Hall); a host of nieces, nephews, relatives
and close friends of the family.
