William “Jay” Mercer, 30, of Rocky Mount, NC passed away April 27, 2018 at his home, in Rougemont, NC. Jay and his family had just celebrated his mother’s fifty-fifth birthday the day before his death.
William Floyd Mercer, III graced the world with his presence January 28, 1988 at Womack Army Medical Center (Cumberland County). Born to Yolanda Pittman Mercer and William Floyd Mercer, Jr., Jay later legally changed his name to William “Jay” Mercer.
Jay graduated from Northern Nash High School in 2006, and received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State University in 2011. Jay was a VBF Maintenance Lead Technician at MERCK & Co. in Durham, NC. Work was a hobby for Jay as he would often practice and troubleshoot issues at home to be better prepared for work.
Jay was laid-back and low-key; however, he was extremely intense - he worked and loved hard. Resilient and persistent, he would always bounce up and try again until the task was accomplished. At a very young age, he began trying to determine how everything worked and operated. Jay was inquisitive and loved learning. He would always take things apart to see if he could put it back together. Somehow he would always end up using few pieces/parts to put it back together, but he could always get it (whatever it was) to work.
Keen on family, Jay’s fondest memories are with his nieces and nephews, cousins, siblings, and his mother. Born prematurely, Jay proved his toughness and ability to fight at a young age. An avid music lover, he wrote and dedicated several songs to his mother - whom he spent a lot of time with and loved deeply and dearly. His laugh was infectious and his smile contagious.
Jay is preceded in death by: his maternal grandmother (Maggie Ree Parker); maternal grandfather (Theodore Roosevelt Pittman); paternal grandfather (William Floyd Mercer, Sr.); aunt (Carolyn Braswell); uncle (Robert Lucas); uncle (Roosevelt Whitehead); cousin (Marvin Rashard Braswell); cousin (Marcel Dionte Mercer).
Jay is survived by: his son Zion Cash Mercer (expected date of arrival is May 7, 2018); his step-son (Joe’ll Truth); his loving mother (Yolanda Pittman Mercer); father (William Floyd Mercer, Jr.); brothers (Terrance Mercer, LaDerrick Pittman, Tony Pittman, and Dennis Battle); sisters (Shaquita Renee Basemore and Tenika Shaunell Mercer); nieces (Brittany Monae Mercer and Rakeema Lanay Mercer); nephew (Terrell Jayvon Mercer); great-nephew (Logan Latrell Mercer); paternal grandmother (Laura Virginia Mercer); a best friend/brother (Anthony “Amp” Taylor); and a host of other nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, co-workers, and friends.

Celebrating the life of Mr. William Jay Mercer
Thank you for signing Mr. William Jay Mercer's Guestbook
I am so very sorry for your loss! The death of a dear loved one is hard to bear. The hope that the Bible gives us is such a comfort! The Apostle Paul assures us in Act 24:15, “There will be a resurrection” . Through this bible truth we gain freedom from a morbid fear of death (Hebrews 2:15) and real hope of being reunited with our loved ones who have passed (John 5:28, 29). We can be sure that Jehovah God will do away with death, in fact he views it as the last enemy. (1 Corinthians 15:26) He has a longing to conquer that enemy, to undo death by means of the resurrection. He promises to bring back those who are in his memory and to see them live on earth again. Job 14:14, 15.
But why do we grow old and die? Why does God allow us to suffer? These questions and more are answered in our website, JW.org.

To my cousin, Yolanda and family, I was saddened to learn of my cousin's passing. While untimely, after reading his obituary, it appears to me that Jay lived a full and dedicated life. Of this, I am most proud. I didn't get to know him, but I can tell he was a fine young man. My prayers are with you. Please accept my sincerest condolences. God bless.
Your cousin, Keith Parker
