Rocky Mount, NC
Mrs. Joanna Nicholson Lyons was born on September 13,1924 in Whitakers, North Carolina to the late Mary Blake Nicholson and James Garrett. Mrs. Lyons was called home by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ during the early hour of May 4, 2018 while at Life Care Center, Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
She was married to the late James Lyons of Whitaker, North Carolina for more than forty years, but he preceded her in his homegoing on April 19, 1987.
Mrs. Lyons lived a long and prosperous life with God and her children. As most women during her younger years, she spent the majority of her life time raising her children and caring for her family.
Later, she added raising, sporadically, a host of grandchildren as well as caring for her mother who predeceased her in 1988. Mrs. Lyons was a farmer’s wife who enjoyed attending church, cooking, spending time with friends and other relatives. Two of her most enjoyable pastimes were traveling long distances to visit her children and grandchildren in different parts of the country and having them come home to visit during holidays.
From their union, Mrs. Lyons and her late husband raised fifteen children together, three of which preceded her in death, David Lyons, Charlie Lyons, and Josephine Lyons along with three grandchildren, Dyrell Maye, Tyrone Lyons and Calvin Phillips.
Cherished memories remain with her children, Margie Phillips of Baltimore MD, Lillie Mae Lyons of Brooklyn, NY, Margaret Lyons of Washington, DC, Louis Lyons of Gaithersburg, MD, Geneva Lyons of Poughkeepsie, NY, Ida Mae Lyons of Baltimore, MD, Edna Lyons, Frances Lyons, Brenda Lyons all of Brooklyn, NY, Blanche Diann Bunn, Billy Lyons and Kenneth Lyons all of Rocky Mount, NC; two brothers, Leroy Nicholson and Henry Garrett; five sisters, Bessie Garrett, Ada Garrett, Margaret Garrett, Grace Garrett and Irene Garrett; three daughters-in-law, Regina Lyons, Ernestine Lyons and Patricia Lyons, thirty-two grandchildren, sixty-one great-grandchildren and ten great-great-grandchildren.
A Visitation for Mrs. Lyons will be held from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, with the Funeral Service following the Visitation, beginning at 12:00 noon on Saturday, May 12, 2018 in the Rocky Mount Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home, 325 Nash St., Rocky Mount, NC. The interment will take place immediately following the service in Impact Pointe in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.

I've been where you are now and it may seem like you don't know what way to go from this point with your life,I will say to the Family what ever your plans were before your Mother passed continue with them because that's probably what she would want you to do,just remember all the good times and things that the LORD allowed you to share with her and talk about them some time I've realized it makes life much easier.
