Mrs. Hilda L. Jeffers

Roanoke Rapids, NC

Mrs. Hilda Lawrence Jeffers, 67, of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, was born to the late Della Stone and Milan Lawrence on November 30, 1950. She was raised by her grandmother, Susie J. Price (deceased), in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.

She received her education through Halifax County School System, attending Everetts Elementary, William R. Davie Middle, and J. A. Chaloner High School. It was there that she met her “honey”, as she affectionately called him. Hilda and Calvin Lee Jeffers, Sr. went on their first date on June 25, 1965. He came to visit her at the little pink house atop the hill located just off Highway 48. Bringing her flowers and candy, it was the beginning of a lifelong courtship. That day, they talked for hours and it was then, in that moment, that they knew they never wanted to spend another day apart. She would become Mrs. Calvin Lee Jeffers, Sr. on August 21, 1971. Their union was blessed with three children: Charles (Charlene) of Richmond, Virginia, Calvin, Jr. (Kia) of North Ridge, California, and Sylvia (engaged to Levi) of Ettrick, Virginia.

After high school, she attended Halifax Community College where she obtained her degree in Nursing. She was gainfully employed at Halifax Memorial Hospital for over 40 years. Hilda was Nurse Manager over the Telemetry Unit, as well as, District Nurse for the Northern District of North Carolina. After many years, she resigned her position as Manager, but stayed employed at the hospital at the Psychiatric Ward of Woodside Mental Health Clinic. She felt God was going to use her greatly there. She retired from the hospital some years later and decided to work part-time at the office of Dr. Louis Chetty.

Hilda dedicated her life to Christ in 1985 and became a member of St. Matthew A.M. E. Church in Weldon, North Carolina. In 1992, she responded to the call on her life to become a Minister and preached her initial sermon there. In 1995, she was ordained an Itinerant Elder by Bishop Alton Anderson. After completing her studies with the Board of Examiners of A.M.E. Church, she then furthered her biblical education by attending Moriah Institute of Christian Studies in Fayetteville, North Carolina. There she earned her Masters of Divinity in 2000 and Masters of Theology in 2005. Following her ordination, she served as Youth Pastor, Chairperson for the Finance Committee, District Prayer Leader, Bible and Adult Sunday School Teacher. God then lead her to become Senior Pastor of Macedonia A.M.E. Church in Pendleton, North Carolina and Oak Grove A.M.E. Church in Severn, North Carolina; until He placed in her heart to start her own ministry, Jabbok Teaching in Weldon, North Carolina.

Later, she became the Associate Pastor of Greater Beulah Land Church Ministries in Conway, North Carolina, where Apostle Joyce Cherry was Senior Pastor. Hilda was also a facilitator of Purity with Purpose for Women, where many graduated under her leadership. God then placed her at House of Resurrection in Whitakers, North Carolina under the leadership of Apostle Alvin and Pastor Nancy McDaniel. She served faithfully through the years as Elder, Intercessory Prayer Team Leader, Bible Study Teacher and New Members Teacher.

Peacefully, without fear because she knew who she was and whose she was, Elder Hilda Jeffers answered God’s call to Eternal rest on Sunday, June 3, 2018 at Duke Hospice-Hock Family Pavilion in Durham, North Carolina. Those remaining to reflect upon her abundant life are her husband of 47 years, her three children, and eight grandchildren: Reuben, Jr., Faith, Jared, Malik, Jessica, Joanna, Charles, Jr., and Maya. She is also survived by her only sister, Barbara Jean (Larry) Pierce and Uncle Robert Price, whom she loved dearly; as well as, a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and co-workers.

A Visitation for Mrs. Jeffers will be held from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, with the Funeral Service following the Visitation, beginning at 12:00 noon on June, 9, 2018, in the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D.
