Mrs. Hazel Lavern Powers

Mrs. Hazel Lavern Alexander Powers, 75, of Halifax, North Carolina, died on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at Vidant Edgecombe Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was 75 years old.

She was a native of Suffolk, Virginia and a resident of Prodigy Transitional Rehab in Tarboro, North Carolina for a number of years.

Hazel was born on May 15, 1943 as the youngest child of the late Jessie James Alexander, Sr. and Annie Mae James Alexander. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 34 years: Prince Albert Powers, Sr.; sisters: Dorothy Rawls and Mae Pearl Copeland; brothers: John L. Alexander and Jessie J. Alexander, Jr.; and stepson: Prince A. Powers, Jr.

Hazel worked many years as a Processor at General Electric in Portsmouth, Virginia. She graduated from Suffolk City Schools and enjoyed reading, spelling and playing basketball. She was very energetic, had a good sense of humor, and loved to have a good time.

She is survived by her bother: William R. Alexander of Portsmouth, VA; daughters: Princess Powers McDonald of Suffolk, VA and Angela Powers Mallory (Kevin) of Halifax, NC; step-daughter: Rose Goins of Roanoke Rapids, NC, grandson; Javaze L. McDonald (Geanna); great-granddaughter: Nashara of Iwakuni, Japan; a special granddaughter whom she helped raised: Stephanie Lassiter (Mack) of Suffolk, VA; many step-grandchildren; nieces: Lorraine Brooks (Anthony) of Yorktown, VA, Jacquelyn Whitener of Lawton, OK, and Pamela Blyden (Herbert) of Buffalo, NY; nephews: Isaac Rawls of Brooklyn, NY, James E. Powers (Betty) of Jacksonville, FL, William Larry Pelham (Lavette) of Franklin, VA, Rodney Copeland (Reanea) of Lawton, OK, Curtis L. Joyner (Kimatha), Robert D. Joyner, and John Lee, Jr. of Suffolk, VA; and many grand-nieces, grand-nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

A Visitation for Mrs. Powers will be held from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm, with the Funeral Service following the Visitation, beginning at 1:00 pm, on Wednesday, June 20, 2018, in the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids, NC. The Interment will take place immediately after the Service in Crestview Memorial Cemetery, in Roanoke Rapids, NC.
