Obituary

Rocky Mount, NC

Fleta Louise Acey was born December 16, 1935 in Birmingham, Alabama to William James Acey, Sr and Helen Louise Acey. At the age of eight they relocated from Birmingham, AL to Harlem, NY. Fleta accepted the Christ in 2013. Fleta performed several acts of kindness beginning with her work as a young adult as a missionary with the Episcopal Church to Africa. She was part of a team that was implemented the construction and implementation of a place of worship in Kenya.

She went on to work for the New York City Drug Rehabilitation Center at Edgecombe, as a officer. Which was soon thereafter she became absorbed into the New York State Department of Corrections (NYS -DOC), which launched her career. She worked in many venues of training and management at various facilities. Under the banner of NYS-DOS she extensively trained and mentored officers as a Captain at Sing-Sing Correctional Facility in Ossining, NY. She later transferred to Queensboro Correction Facility subsequently retired after thirty years of service.

Her life was one of teaching, guiding, mentoring, comforting and encouraging all that encountered her throughout her career and life. She would give shelter to those that needed it. Her home was one where it was common to have someone who was once a stranger quickly become a close friend, and inclusive in the things that the family would do, be it an impromptu BBQ, or a formal family dinner.

Fleta departed this life into eternity November 18, 2018. She was preceded in death by her Parents: William J. Acey, Sr., and Helen L. Acey; Her Sister-In-Law: Joyce Oliver Acey, and her Nephew: Dwayne William Acey.

Fleta leaves to cherish her memories Her children: Kimberly E. Smith-Hamilton of Orlando, FL; Dominique Gonzalez of Wake Forest, NC, and Erik Acey Russell, of Rocky Mount, NC and wife Vandell Arnold Russell. Her siblings: William James Acey, Jr. and wife Rita Elvera Acey, Emilia Matilda Acey, Sinclair Lewis Acey. Her grandchildren: Kaliq, Ranekwa, Khalel, Elijah, Khalyesse, Nyashia, Isaiah, Ahmad and Amir, and 5 great-grandchildren. Her Nephews: Michael Acey, and Alexander Dumas Acey. Her Nieces: Helen Acey Cole, and Noel Acey; and a host of friends.

A Visitation for Ms. Acey will be held from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, with the Celebration of Life Service following the Visitation, beginning at 12:00 noon, on Saturday, November 24, 2018 in the chapel of H. D. Pope Funeral Home, 325 Nash St. in Rocky Mount, NC.
