Retired Captain (RMPD) Milton Harris

Milton Harris was born August 18, 1942 to the late Russell Harris, Jr. and Naomi Harris in Pinetops.

Milton Harris accepted Christ on June 23, 2002 and was a hard-working church member. He was a dedicated Trustee and helped spearhead the building of the James E. Thorne Family Life Center. Milton had a kind heart and a very giving spirit.

Milton attended the Edgecombe County Public School System. He was a 1960 graduate of Conetoe High School. Milton attended Beaufort County Technical Institute in Washington, NC where he earned an Associate Degree in Police Science. He attended North Carolina Agricultural and Technical College of Greensboro, NC and Wesleyan College of Rocky Mount, NC where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Police Science. Milton completed
the Police Executive Development Program at UNC Chapel Hill, the Administrative Officer’s Course at the University of Louisville in Kentucky, and numerous other police training institutes.

Milton Harris enlisted in the Air Force in 1963. He served as a Sergeant and completed tours of duty in New York, Texas, and the Philippines. Milton received an honorable discharge in 1969.

Milton Harris began his career at the Rocky Mount Police Department in 1969. He was employed by RMPD for 29 years and 11 months. He was promoted to Detective in 1975 to sergeant in 1977, to Lieutenant in 1982, and to Captain in 1988. While serving as Captain of the Staff Services Division, his duties included officer recruitment, inservice training, and
management of other internal support service such as animal and parking control, taxi and wrecker inspections, and telecommunications. He was also responsible for the division operating budget and for providing training/guidance to subordinate supervisors. Milton was a natural born leader and a life time member of the North State Law Enforcement Officer

Milton was a member of Unity Lodge 64 and JW Moore Consistory #57. He was also a member of Rofelt Pasha Temple # 175. Milton leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 51 years, Veareece Elder Harris of Rocky Mount, NC; daughter, Latreece Denise Barnes (Art) of Rocky Mount, NC; mother, Naomi Harris of Rocky Mount, NC; two grandchildren Alicia Barnes of Atlanta, Georgia and Latrelle Barnes of Rocky Mount, NC; brothers Russell Harris (Margaret) of Knoxville, Tennessee, James Douglas Harris (Bobby Ann) of Rocky Mount, NC; sisters Geraldine Harris of San Antonio, Texas, Yvonne Lewis of Rocky Mount,
NC, Patricia Diane Harris of Rocky Mount, NC, Michele McCorkle (Franklin) of Greenville, NC; sisters-in-law Dora White (Dennis) of Van Alstyn, Texas, Lillian Boddie (Rufus) of Texarkana, Texas; brother-in-law Rober Elder of Fayetteville, NC; uncles Ernest Hines, Portsmouth, Virginia; aunt Margaret Harris of Chesapeake, Virginia; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A Visitation for Retired Captain Harris will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon with the Funeral Service following the Visitation, beginning at 12:00 noon on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church; 702 W. Raleigh Blvd., in Rocky Mount, N.C. The entombment will take place immediately after the service in Gardens of Gethsemane in Rocky Mount, N.C.
